For Beginners: You should know the Grammar Difference Between 不 and 没

In Chinese learning, you may see 不 and 没 very often, indeed.

Many learners get confused with these 2 important characters because both of them have the meaning "not" as a negation word in English, but they are used differently.

Know usages of 不 and 没. Become a master at using negative sentences.

The word 不 bù is always used to negate something.

In some ways, it is one of the closest things Mandarin has to the certain word "no" in English language.

For example, if someone asks you if you are hungry, you can simply say ( 不 bù ) to tell them that no, you aren’t hungry.

Hanzi Pinyin English
你 饿 吗? nǐ è ma? Are you hungry?
No.

Using 不 To Negate Adjectives

不 + adjective is a common way to say that something is NOT in a certain way.

For example, I have a dog that is kind of stupid. I would say:

我的 狗 不 聪明
wǒde gǒu bù cōngming
My dog is not smart

Here, we use 不 bù directly before 聪明 cōngming to say that my dog is not smart.

Consider these further interesting examples of 不 being used to say that an object, place, or person is not a certain way (not good looking, not clean, not tall, not comfortable, etc).

这件 衣服 不好看 。
zhèjiàn yīfu bùhǎokàn.
This clothing is ugly (literally: not good looking).

这个 地方 不 干净 。
zhège dìfāng bù gānjìng.
This place isn’t clean.

我 最近 身体 不舒服 。
wǒ zuìjìn shēntǐ bùshūfu.
Recently, I haven’t been feeling well (literally: my body has not felt comfortable)

我 姐姐 不 太 高 , 但是 很 漂亮 。
wǒ jiějie bú tài gāo, dànshì hěn piàoliang.
My older sister isn’t very tall, but she is very pretty.

这个 地方 夏天 一点儿 也不 热 。
zhège dìfāng xiàtiān yìdiǎnr yěbù rè.
This place’s summer is not hot at all.

今天 天气 真 不好。
jīntiān tiānqì zhēn bùhǎo.
Today the weather is really bad.

不 can be paired with verbs to express that they are NOT happening in the present.

This can be about something you are not doing today. For example:

我 很 开心 。 今天 不 上班 !
wǒ hěn kāixīn. jīntiān bú shàngbān!
I am very happy. Today I don’t work!

This can be used for anything that is happening in the present. For example, a vegetarian would say:

我 不吃 肉 。
wǒ bùchī ròu.
I don’t eat meat.

EXCEPTION - if you want to say something is not yet happening (but will happen), that is when you use 没 méi。

Here are a few examples to help you understand the use of 不 with the present tense:

爸爸 今天 不 在家 。
bàba jīntiān bú zàijiā.
Today dad isn’t home.

他 不是 留学生 。
tā búshi liúxuéshēng.
He isn’t an exchange student.

我 不会 说 汉语 。
wǒ búhuì shuō hànyǔ.
I can’t speak Chinese.

tā bù tīng māma shuō dehuà.
She doesn’t listen to what her mom tells her.

现在 不能 开车 。
xiànzài bùnéng kāichē.
Can’t drive right now.

哥哥 不 常 给 父母 打电话 。
gēge bù cháng gěi fùmǔ dǎdiànhuà.
My older brother rarely (literally: not often) gives my parents a call.

不 bù can also be used to say that you will not be doing something in the near/far future or that something is not happening in the present.

Future:

今天 星期五 。 明天 不 上课 !
jīntiān xīngqīwǔ. míngtiān bú shàngkè!
Today is Friday. Tomorrow I don’t have class!

Something useful to remember: If you are a beginner Chinese learner and you see a word like 明天 míngtiān (tomorrow) or 明年 míngnián (next year), you generally should use 不 bù and not 没 méi.

我 明年 不 去 美国 。
wǒ míngnián bú qù měiguó.
Next year I won’t go to the US.

Future clue - 明年 míngnián

暑假 我 不想 回国 了 。
shǔjià wǒ bùxiǎng huíguó le.

Future clue - 暑假 shǔjià

没 (méi) Negates Past Actions (can be replaced by 没有)

没 (méi) is used to refute/deny actions that occurred in the past.

Examples:

我昨天没喝酒。
wǒ zuótiān méi hējiǔ.
I didn’t drink alcohol yesterday

他昨天没打电话给我。
tā zuótiān méi dǎ diànhuà gěi wǒ
He didn’t call me yesterday.

没 (méi) can say something has not happened yet

他们吃完饭以后没付钱。
tāmen chī wán fàn yǐhòu méi fù qián
They didn’t pay after eating.

妈妈没做晚饭。
māmā méi zuò wǎnfàn
Mom didn’t cook dinner.

没 (méi) can use to indicate something has not been experienced
过 has to be used after the verb.

Subject + 没 + Verb + 过 + Object

我没吃过中国菜。
wǒ méi chīguò zhōngguó cài
I have never eaten Chinese food

Subject + (从来) 没 + 去 + 过 + place

我(从来)没去过中国。
wǒ (cónglái) méi qùguò zhōngguó
I have never (ever) been to China

More useful examples:

我不吃早饭。wǒ bù chī zǎofàn.
我没吃早饭。wǒ méi chī zǎofàn
When using 不(bù), it means that you normally "do not" eat breakfast.

When using 没(méi), however, the meaning changes to saying you "did not" eat breakfast, implying that you’re talking about "what you did not do today."
